Official website of ICT21-EE network The European thematic network “ICT for energy efficiency” aims at federating a wide variety of stakeholders initially from 10 European countries to develop common understanding of good practices in the field of ICT applied to energy efficiency in cities. The approach will focus on what has been done and what can be done in urban areas, places where the issue of energy efficiency is particularly crucial. The concept and reality of sustainable cities will be discussed and challenged through three working groups and the creation of a social network and best practices platform.
- ICT for energy efficiency in buildings; - ICT for energy efficiency in transport; - ICT as catalyst of change in user behaviours. The scope of the project will therefore go from best practice promotion - i.e. selection of case studies to identify appropriate technologies to be implemented and to measure energy savings - to strategy thinking and writing with the view to contributing to the new i2010 strategy for sustainable growth. EU funding is asked for 30 months. One plenary meeting gathering at least all partners and two meetings per working group will take place every year. Consequently, five types of activities will be implemented: - An initial, mid-term and final conferences which define the objectives to be achieved and the on-going and final results; - Working groups activities which gather the state of the art and the good practices from the partners; - The development of an online repository that enable the participants to get involved in an up-to-date decision making platform, in a way to strengthen the social network; - The communication and the promotion of the thematic network and the creation of a European Club to ensure the wider impact of the initiative and its sustainability; - A mid-term thinking based on the recommendations that came up during the project, and which can more adequately meet with the issues here addressed that can only be thought out on a long-term basis. Stakeholders from public and private sectors will participate to the network. As they come from ten European countries and gather more than 1000 towns/cities, 21 corporations, 43 regional and local organisations which implement, co-ordinate and facilitate energy and environment policies, from all over Europe, the overall objective to define strategies and to promote good practices and policy debate at the European level for the wider possible audience should be adequately met. Finally, the project aims to produce sustainable outcomes. Actually, it will foster a new model of governance with innovative techniques and tools promoted for a rational use of ICT, through the confrontation of public and private stakeholders and innovative companies. It will be considered as a new laboratory for confrontation of ideas and cultural differences. Furthermore, the network shall be identified as a key actor in the dialogue with the European commission and the council presidency and more generally to the European policy arena. Last but not least, the network shall impact on the structural changes needed to achieve more sustainable energy production and consumption. The project officially started on the 1st of October 2008.
