The 6th Summer School in Communications for Sustainable Development has closed its doors, but remains open-minded.

Gilles Berhault - © DRThe executive committee of the 6th Summer School in Communications for Sustainable development decided this year to base feedback from participants on two main themes:

- What role will communications have in ten years time?

- What influence will sustainable development have on communications and marketing?

What were the lasting impressions of the recent Summer School?
These were questions posed to Gilles Berhault, president of ACIDD and founder of the Summer School, who recounts the diversity of exchanges made and issues tackled…

We live in an uncertain and complex world. How can one effectively work together? How can communication be part of the sustainable revolution?

As the opening words of Éric Guillon, President of Comité 21, emphasised: “We need to work together and anticipate the future.” Sustainable development is a new space of creativity, and this is not only reserved to communication agencies. The latter are really beginning to integrate sustainable development into their work.

Is that a generational problem?

We are facing a profound change in the economy, and in human relations: the “Y” generation, that since birth, has lived life through screens, are now at the stage where they are coming into power, Marcel Desvergne from AEC Communication rightly reminds us. But he also insists on the necessity of society’s memory and reflects on the identity of the organisations that manage our digital heritage.

What restraints were identified in the course of the Summer School?

The players in the communication world are confronted with queries on how to progress, which is often tied to a “lack of credible information,” deplored Alice Audouin from Havas Media. She goes on to say, “Communications for sustainable development will get better the day that information on sustainable development is itself better.”

"Green & connected cities": how to live and work better together

Alongside their existing work, ACIDD - TIC21 has been for a number of months leading the implementation of propositions and projects that will favour the use of innovative practices and activity patterns. This work is taking place within the context of a new economy, founded on the best usage of technology and on sustainable development. The conclusions of the European forum that took place on the 27 May organised in Brussels by the Committee of Regions and ACIDD on the subject of Green & connected cities: sharing initiatives, notably confirmed the need to rethink modes of working that respond better to the imperatives of sustainable development, in an carbon conscious economy.

Within this context, deep and innovative thinking was initiated on the subject of tele-activity centres and new spaces in which to work.

In order to move forward and truly and efficiently pursue the propositions that aim to mobilise local authorities and committed businesses, ACIDD, in July 2008, created the group Green & Connected Cities. With the support and involvement of the Institut de l’Entreprise 2.0 at the Grenoble School of Management and partnerships with active organisations: Eurocities, ARF, Villes Internet and Fedarene, the group for ‘Green & Connected Cities’ is a unique programme that aims to give its members the capacity to efficiently respond to the key stakes of a sustainable city.

Gilles Pennequin - © DR- The Union for the Mediterranean: Interview with Gilles Pennequin: “It is a geographical area at high-risk.”

Gilles Pennequin is in charge of the Territorial dimension and Local and Regional Authorities and is also deputy to the Head of the Environment and Sustainable Development for the Union for the Mediterranean of the Presidency of the Republic.
This man is a sustainable development expert and worked for a long time at DIACT. Today he mostly works creating links between sustainable development and ICT through projects funded by the French co-presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean.

It is from that position that he worked on the “sustainable and connected towns” project that was presented by ACIDD. According to him, sustainable development is fundamental to the success of the Mediterranean project, since experts have made clear that the Mediterranean zone is battling with serious environmental problems and has unfavourable predictions of future climate perspectives.
